Homemade Exchange

Posted in Homemade...everything tagged , , , , at 10:10 am by mottoblasco

So my husband and I talked one day about trying a bunch of different homemade products, but since I am a SAHM of 5 kids, 2 of which are being Homeschooled I don’t have much free time on my hands.  Wouldn’t it be nice to have a party where we could try a lot of different products.  The Homemade Exchange was born!

I emailed all the ladies I thought would be interested in being envolved and a few weeks later the day came.  There ended up being 11 participants(only 1 couldn’t come but was still able to contribute & benefit from it all) & 12 products 🙂

I will try to post links to give credit where credit is due as most of us got our ‘recipes’ from the www known to most of us as Pinterest 🙂

Zipzicle

I am so excited to try these  I just got them in the mail.   I got 12 for $2.99(bought 2 packages though) and shipping was only 99c each package.  Each one is 1/3 c. according to the website and ‘invented’ by a kid…awesome in my book!  They shipped fast too!  I will let you know how well they work after we have used them.  Check them out for yourselves!

UPDATE: We have used these with good success.  I mostly put juice or leftover smoothies in them.  Relatively easy to clean but if not, cheap enough to throw away!  Worth the price paid!

Homemade dishwasher tablets THAT WORK!

Posted in Homemade...everything tagged , , at 5:49 pm by mottoblasco

Finally on my 5th attempt at a recipe for dishwashing detergent I found one that works!  Follow her instructions exactly and you will get great results.  I have 5 kids,  and hate chemicals that are in so many things.  Combine that with the fact that we are a family of 7 living on 1 income I have to be frugal/thrifty/cheap…call it what you may.  I found this thru Pinterest (thank you to the inventor of Pinterest!) and tried it.

A few notes:

~I have a baby and the nipples don’t get that greasy, white stuff on them nearly so bad.

~Make sure that your ice cube tray makes tabs that fit in the dishwasher…mine don’t 😦  I gotta cut it in half each time I wash a load.

~You NEED to top the tab w/ a little Dawn(like Jillee says to do) 🙂

~You NEED the vinegar in the wash too.  Pour it over the top or put it in a cup, just make sure it’s in there!(like Jillee says to do) 🙂

P.S . I am loving her blog now!  I’ve found several homemade ‘recipes’ for things that I will be trying very soon!

Mason Jar Tumbler Lid ~ DIY

Posted in Homemade...everything tagged , at 9:14 pm by mottoblasco

I LOVE!!!! my mason jars.  This is a new found love.  My husband says they are so homely (he he…he means homey, I laughed hard).  Anyways, I saw them all over Pinterest & Etsy, 2 very dangerous sites for me!  I wanted some since we are beginning to get BIG into Juicing and hubby wants glass to drink from & to be able to take it with him.  I didn’t wanna pay $20 for a glass bottle nor $6 for a lid w/ a hole especially since there are 7 of us.  So here goes on my very short tutorial.

tumbler lid

First…go to her site here    and follow her directions.  😀  I LOVE the plaid lid she shows, I wish I could’ve found them.  But here’s my take on the whole process.

I followed her directions on both the metal & plastic lids.  The plastic was easier in my opinion.  Once you make the hole on the plastic you can pretty much just pull the shavings off.  With the metal lids you have to use tin snips or something like that to cut the metal pieces  MAKE SURE your grommet it 3/8″ INSIDE…I made that mistake at first and now have 10 grommet’s I’ll never use 😦  I got my grommets from Amazon.  All my straws are 3/8″ that I got from Etsy and Amazon.  We have some Acrylic, these are hard non-piable and  we have some non-BPA plastic which are closer to disposable straws.

I bought the wide mouth, cause I love how they look.  And I bought the 24 ounce & 12 ounce jars.  The straws are too tall for the 12 ounce jars so I cut down some of the non-BPA straws down.  We love them!

A great addition to my ‘deceptively delicious’ lifestyle

Posted in Deceptively Delicious, Mmmmmmm fooooood tagged , , at 11:09 pm by mottoblasco

I came across a wonderful product by

qq-nurturme.jpgNurture me.  It’s freeze dried, ground up organic fruits/veggies.

How awesome is that!  It’s made to be baby food that you can just re-constitute by adding water.  However, they also give you ideas on how to add it to your regular foods to boost the nutritional value in the foods your kids(& yourself) eat.  Obviously, this should NOT replace fresh fruits & veggies but can be a good addition, especially for those children who are not getting enough fruits &/or veggies.

I’ll let you know once I’ve tried these in a few recipes.  So far I bought squash, carrot & sweet potato…but I may have to try some more soon!

UPDATE:  I have found that these powdered veggies have a stronger flavor than most of the purees that I have made.  I’ve had to use less than I’d like because it alters the flavor of the food, sometimes, too much.  Also, sprinkling these in foods usually alters the flavor wayyyyy too much…so much so that the kids won’t eat.  BUT as a baby food, baby ate them just fine!

Deceptively Delicious begins

Posted in Deceptively Delicious, Mmmmmmm fooooood tagged , , at 4:06 pm by mottoblasco

I did it.  I have made several of the recipes from my Deceptively Delicious cookbook.  And I’m loving it.

My first venture was a big-un.  I went for Jerry’s Cinnamon Buns(w/ carrot & cauliflower).  The buns were good, I’d make them again for sure.  The icing was lacking…I will have to tinker w/ this one.  My little miss thought it was applesauce poured on top…although she did eat it all! BUT I have to commend her for making some Cinnamon Buns w/ 1/10th the fat & calories of a regular one.  Kudos.

I next made a few easy ones like Grilled Cheese(w/ squash or sweet potatoes) & the kids don’t notice anything different.  I’ve made it a couple times w/out the kids 🙂  And also one of her versions of Mac & Cheese(w/ garbanzo beans), this didn’t go over as well.  The beans had a strong flavor but maybe a different bean would work better?  I’ll let you know 🙂

My last recipe tried was Fettucine Alfredo(w/ cauliflower).  Can I give it a true rating cause I didn’t follow the recipe ‘exactly as written’?  I dunno but, it was pretty good.  It called for Mozzarella & Parmesan.  Now I LUV Alfredo sauce, the good stuff full of fat & flavor.  But this was a good starting point for a healthier version AND with the added benefits of the veggie puree(of which I could not taste the cauliflower AT ALL).

UPDATE: I make Grilled cheese w/ squash or sweet potatoes almost every time now.

Deceptively Delicious…o yeah!

Posted in Deceptively Delicious, Mmmmmmm fooooood tagged , , , at 3:24 pm by mottoblasco

I just got the Deceptively Delicious & Double Delicious cookbooks by Jessica Seinfeld(yup, Jerry’s wife) for Christmas & I am so excited to try some recipes out.

In case you haven’t heard of it before all of her recipes have pureed veggies(some w/ fruit too) ‘hidden’ in them.  Mostly so that children don’t realize they are getting the vegetables they need and won’t usually eat.  I think it’s a great idea, plus it makes the food healthier all around.  Now that can’t be bad can it?

I am a Christian so I won’t be deceiving my children by lying to them about what is in the food, because that just isn’t right in my eyes.  And the author even says she puts a side of vegetables on the kids plate so they understand how important it is to eat vegetables.  I even plan on showing & telling my kids what is in the foods so that they know & will hopefully grow up to be healthy eaters as my husband and I are striving to be.

I plan on blogging about each recipe I try, as I try it so make sure to come back!  My first post will be about the pureeing aspect & how easy it is!

Anyone love scones as much as me?!

Posted in Mmmmmmm fooooood, The Blasco Kids tagged , , at 4:16 pm by mottoblasco

I was attempting a scone recipe to use at Christmas time w/ my side of the family.  Especially since I can make & freeze them.  When we’re ready to eat them just pop them in the oven…

THEY ARE GUUUD!!  Normally when I find a recipe I have to tweek it.  Only 3 times have I found a recipe that we didn’t need to tweek.  This is one of them.  AND I used 1/2 regular flour & 1/2 white whole wheat flour.  Normally, when using whole wheat flour you have to add things because otherwise it comes out dry.  This didn’t happen!  AWESOME 🙂  Check out Grandma Johnson’s Scones at AllRecipes.com.  I can’t wait to try different flavors: cranberry, choc chip, cinnamon chip(was great!), plain sugar(I bet good w/ coffee), blueberry, etc…

I will be making these again in the next week or two and will take pictures of the process I used.  It is different than what is described in Grandma Johnson’s Scones recipe online, but ingredients are the same.  My youngest, Logan, was snatching(I didn’t know he knew how to snatch yet) my scone away from me.

Grandma Johnson’s Scones…my way

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup white whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 egg
  • 1/2 cup cinnamon chips(have fun with the possiblities out there)

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, blend the sour cream and baking soda, and set aside.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
  3. In a food processor, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt. Add tabs of cold butter into mixing tube while the processor is on.  Blend until crumbly texture.
  4. Add the sour cream mixture and egg into the flour mixture.  Pulse processor until just moistened.
  5. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead briefly adding in cinnamon chips. Break dough in half.  Roll or pat dough into 2 rounds. Cut into 12 wedges, and place them 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake 12 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven, until golden brown on the bottom.

Getting my butt in gear

Posted in Home, Mmmmmmm fooooood tagged , , , at 4:31 pm by mottoblasco

So, I’m getting that itch to make tons of new foods again.  Probably because of the holidays & the million blog & recipe sites I’m getting e-mails from with pictures of delicious looking foods.  Either way, the recipe search has begun.

This past Thanksgiving I began with Leigh’s Pumpkin Roll.  Now Leigh probably didn’t make up the recipe but she’s the one who had me addicted & in turn my Grandmother is as well.  So much so that Grandma Cos hid the last of the Pumpkin Roll from the 25 other family members & yelled at anyone who touched the plate.  🙂  This recipe will quickly follow for those who have already asked for it, stay tuned !

Also, I FINALLY got my KitchenAid mixer & was able to make my own batch of Mandy’s Sugar cookies which are the Shiz-nit!  I’m not sure I can share this recipe…because Mandy is trying  to be an up & coming baking entrepenuer.  This may be the signature!

I do realize it is kind of Julie-&-Julia-esque(although I have not yet seen the movie itself) but sometimes we need inspiration.  So will you help?

Please post the recipe as a comment or send me an e-mail…I hope to hear from everyone soon!
